Feast Day of St. John of the Cross
The Feast Day of St. John of the Cross, Spanish mystic and Carmelite saint was celebrated on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at The National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel In Middletown, NY. The day was devoted to the spirituality of St. John of the Cross and his teachings, beginning with a Feast Day Mass, followed by lunch and a Conference presented by Fr. James Hess, O.Carm. The person who journeys with St. John of the Cross enters into a union with God that is identified as a purification process and a maturation of the human being, one that is both active and passive at the same time. Knowing and experiencing God through the “dark night of the soul” can ultimately lead us to know and understand ourselves in a whole new way, allowing the light of God to be revealed in its fullness. “As we journey together in faith and begin to understand the value of our own dark nights, whether frequent or infrequent, we are able to step aside and find strength and solace in knowing that we are never alone in our pain, that God journeys with us” says Carol Bezak, Shrine Director.
